What Should I look for in a Boat Cover?
If you own a boat you know that you need to protect your investment from bad weather and strong suns to prevent ageing. As well as bird droppings, tree sap and other things that will ruin the look and devalue your boat. This begs the question; What should I look for when buying a boat cover?
Choosing a Boat Cover
On the marketplace, you can buy a huge amount of different boat covers. Different styles, fabrics and weight but how do you pick a good cover that will last from a cheap cover?
Fabric Weight
To start with, the weight of the cover is important. Fabric weight is often measured in ounces per square yard. The weight of a cover doesn’t instantly tell you the quality of a cover but 6oz is much better than 1oz for example.
You will also see Denier used a lot when people advertise boat covers. Denier is a unit of mass that is used to measure the weight of a cover by the thread (material) used and can be a good indicator of quality.
Cover Material
Secondly, the type of material used is very telling of a good cover. Teflon Coated Acrylic is the best material you can get for a boat cover but it is very expensive. The cheapest covers will be made of Pigment Coated Polyester which is fine for a boat that is inside but will not last very long left outdoors.
