Description

These 8hp 4-Stroke outboard engines from Orca are a standout game changer model in the range. This is a single-cylinder delivering more power for its weight than most of its rivals. The well-known brands in the industry are using a twin-cylinder design at 8hp, but that means more weight and more costly to manufacture and run. With their smart, stylish looks, these Orca 8hp engines are light and easy to handle, weighing the same as our Orca 6hp. The Orca 8hp outboard motor is convenient to store and use, offering the power you need to hit the water with confidence.

This Orca 8hp engine has a compact size, large carrying handles and a built-in fuel tank of 1.4ltr capacity, enhancing its portability. It will switch between the built-in fuel tank and a separate fuel tank (not included) at the flick of a switch. This engine design gives you low fuel consumption, simple controls and low noise and vibration levels, along with Orca Outboards reliability promise. This is a 17.5″ (445mm), short shaft model.

For families wanting to get on the water easily and cheaply. Perfect for SIB’s, Dinghys, Tenders or anything else that needs a small outboard engine.

Great little outboard, pushed my 3330 Vee along very nicely 😊

Thanks for the review, Cory. Hope you like your Orca 12hp just as much.

Really nice engine. Works and starts well. It pushes my 3.4m dinghy along nicely. Only minor hiccup was that the fuel filter was faulty. However, I emailed BoatWorld and they sent me another one immediately. So that was sorted out painlessly. It would be nice to get a little more documentation with it on how to service/ maintain/ use. But other than that a really good engine and good service from BoatWorld.

Good power, light enough to carry on my own and great to have the build in fuel tank as well. Very pleased with it.

A great engine and very reliable. It’s powered our boat with 5 people on board, towing a sailing dinghy against the tide in a force 5!
The team at Boatworld are fantastic and super helpful. Would highly recommend!

Hi Del. Many thanks for taking the time to give us your feedback on the Orca 8hp. I am very disappointed to hear that you did not receive a call back about your outboard, I can only apologise for this. Regarding the white smoke, it is possible that this was oil burning off after transport. If you or your friend still have access to the outboard we would be happy to assist with any diagnosis or suggestions for ensuring you are getting as much power out of the outboard as you should be. Thanks.

Hi Phillip. Thanks for taking the time to tell us about your experience with your Orca 8hp. I can only apologise for the confusion with fuel filters this was as a result of sending out a sealed unit rather than a screw top filter. Regarding the issues you are having with a lag with accelerating, I will be in touch with some information on this and we can try to get this sorted asap for you. Thanks for the feedback on having to do the work remotely, these are just suggestions we are always happy to undertake the work ourselves, but we will be more clear about this moving forwards. Thanks.

Like a lot of small boat owners, I am limited to the weight I can apply to my transom and of course this limits my power options as well. I have an open 12ft aluminium, shallow ‘v’ hull. It’s a little heavier than a lot of the more modern aluminium offerings of today, it was built in Finland in the late 80’s and is all welded and has a very thick hull plate, still a light boat but 5hp was simply not enough to get her on the plane. I had this engine from a previous boat and thought I’d try her out, thought about going up to a 8 or 9 2 stroke keeping the engine down under 30kg.
well, when they say this is a game changer, it really is ! 8hp 4stroke under 30kg, unheard of, brilliant, what can I say, I just had to buy one. A friend of mine has had a 6hp Orca now for approx. 2 years and it has never missed a beat, he loves it, quiet, smooth and pushes his 340 SIB along nicely. I have put the Orca 6hp on my boat and it will Plane, just with weight forward, so I am pretty confidant the 8hp will get her there. Will post another review, once I have run her for a wee while. All I can say for now is, Boat World are a pleasure to do business with, so helpful and friendly and great products, all at superb prices, hopefully it will stay that way 🙂 I unboxed the engine as soon as it arrived on Wednesday and she’s a cracker, oil was supplied ! fired her up for a short spell, started 2nd pull, very pleased, thank you all at Boat World, Jay, Dumfries & Galloway

2nd Review…Update, I have now been using this engine for 4 months now and as expected, it’s a great engine, never missed a beat. for a single cylinder of 140cc or 8hp, it’s not quite as noisy as I would of expected, so that’s a wee bonus. Again with a larger single cylinder you would also expect a good amount of vibration, but I’ve got to say, it’s no more than I have experienced on any of my 4,5 and 6hp units, again, I’m impressed. Fuel economy has been superb and better than I expected. I started using this engine on an aluminium 12ft open boat with a shallow ‘V’ hull and it performed impeccably, however, I have now switched to a 3.1M poly boat, (Whaly 310) and again this engine is so well matched. The new boat is rated to 10HP Max but I thought I’d stick with my Orca 8hp, so pleased I did, because of the reduced rate, the boat doesn’t suffer from bow rise as much and she is quick to flatten out to the plane with relative ease 🙂 If like me, you run a small 10 to 12ft open for lochs and occasional inshore rock hopping or a SIB and want the ease of lifting and carrying a light weight unit with plenty of power, look no further, the Orca 8hp is a cracker, thanks again Boat World ! 2. Just test run my new 8HP for the first time in a water tank. All seems ok apart from the tell-tale water outlet is spraying out rather than the conventional single narrow stream of water. Is this OK / normal? Roy Westland

Hi Keith. All our outboards come with a bottle of engine oil, which is the correct amount for the outboard. The gear oil is already in the outboard as it in a sealed unit. Thanks.

  6. Have you got mounting height specifications as I want to use this offset on a 17.5ft v Hull speedboat as a Auxiliary engine and not sure of the standard or long shaft engine. Kind Regards Andy

As an auxiliary to a speedboat, it would normally be a long shaft engine you require. The length of the short shaft engine from the top of the mounting bracket to the cavitation plate (which is what should align as true as possible to the bottom of the hull) is 17.5in. The long shaft is 22.5in, here is a link to the Orca 8hp Long Shaft Engine if that would be the better engine for you.

QIs it ready to use in salt water?
    A

Yes, this engine can be used in saltwater but we suggest using a product called Blu Thru which removes the salt build up in your engine after using it on the sea. If you don't use a product like this the salt builds up in your engine which can cause issues.
